Highgate Garden & Bed and Breakfast has been developed over the last 16 yrs from a bare paddock into a beautiful garden of variety and interest. The growth has been such that we are now pruning trees with a chainsaw - fantastic!
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Highgate Garden is not a manicured, over structured garden nor a picture perfect garden but a more natural wooded and relaxed garden with many different features where I sit and sip!! Goldfish swim round the water lilies in the sunken garden pond and the birds never cease to sing.
Of course it is picture perfect and interesting - what am I thinking?
Visitors spend from 1 hour to 4 hours (if having a picnic) wandering around the garden. The garden is located 1.7km from the village of Pirongia, a district that is home to many arts and crafts people, outdoor pursuits and, of course, a variety of cafe's and a very good artisan outlet.
There are facilities to hire (rugby club rooms & Memorial Hall) in Pirongia Village for those `special' gatherings and Pirongia Clydsdales can trot groups up to the garden by arrangement - a lovely day out.
There is off road parking for cars and the smaller buses/coaches providing the ground is not wet! Coaches usually let passengers off at the entrance to the garden.
Admission to Highgate Garden is $5.00 per person. We have a kitchen and toilet separate from the house which is available for visitors.
